MaryMOO

About

MaryMOO is a small, experimental MOO world inaugurated in the Spring of 2009 for hosting projects related to the University of Mary Washington. Accordingly, our core map is based on UMW's campus. Besides providing an interesting place to explore text-based world-building, I wanted a space to archive and reference some of the great pedagogical work done in and on MOOs over the past decade or so. Many MOOs have shut their doors forever, with no way of recovering some of the really useful or interesting projects. Source code for fancy generic objects, for example, is rather hard to come by, and I would love for maryMOO to provide a place for things like that to live.

If you have access to such a resource, or if you just have questions about the project, please contact Zach Whalen.

Connection Instructions

First, you'll need a MOO client. Basically, this is a fancy telnet client, but don't worry if you don't know what that is. I personally use tk-MOO on Windows, MudWalker for Mac, and GnoeMoe for Linux.

The installation and setup for these clients differs slightly, but at some point you'll need two pieces of information for configuring a connection to maryMOO. Here they are:

Host:moo.elsweb.org
Port:7777

When you first log in, you'll find yourself in Combs Hall, room 349. (This is the computer lab where I normally teach MOO, so it makes sense.) From there, you can explore the rest of Combs Hall and some parts of the surrounding campus.

Current student projects (Fall 2009) are connected to a mysterious portal just outside the window in Combs 349.
